About the Award (Nominations Closed for 2025)
Do you know an individual, organization or religious affiliation who has contributed to heritage in South Bruce Peninsula? Consider making a nomination for the South Bruce Peninsula Heritage Award.
Staff places a call for nominations. Council reviews the applications and chooses who wins the award. Winners are recognized at the annual Volunteer Dinner or by other means if we aren't able to hold the Volunteer Dinner.
No more than two awards are given each year and once received, the award can't be received again for three years.
When considering making a nomination, please review the policy to make sure that you understand the award criteria.
Complete the nomination form. If you are unable to print the form, call us and we can arrange to mail a form to you or you can pick up a form at Town Hall.
Make sure that the person/organization/business/religious affiliation you are nominating signs the nomination form. The person submitting the nomination must also sign the form.
Make sure to submit the completed nomination forms by the date and time outlined in the call for nominations.

2025 South Bruce Peninsula Heritage Award Winners |
The call for nominations was issued on December 13, 2024 and closed on January 31, 2025. Council considered the nominations received and decided to give the award to Sheila Gatis and Tom & Dee Ashman.
Sheila Gatis-Nominated by Wiarton & District Chamber of Commerce Shelia Gatis has authored and/or edited many history books, including Green Meadows and Golden Sands: The History of Amabel Township 1851-1982. She is currently working on a new book about Colpoys Bay Village. She plans to eventually donate her collection of vintage postcards to the Bruce County Archives. We thank Sheila Gatis for her dedication to our community and for her ongoing efforts to share the history of our area.
Tom and Dee Ashman-Nominated by Karen Earls Tom and Dee Ashman published the book Carved in Stone-The Legend of Willie and they created the first 3,000 Wiarton Willie noses. The operate the website ruralrootz.com which is dedicated to showcasing the beauty and heritage of their 100 acre property. They were the first acreage in Ontario to be protected by a Conservation Easement combined with an integrated trail for walking. They maintain their property as a nature reserve. We thank Tom and Dee Ashman for their dedication to our community and for their ongoing efforts to preserve natural heritage.
